Germination

A Step by Step Guide: How to Germinate Marijuana Seeds

When you have already decided what marijuana seed to grow, the next important phase is germinating the seeds. But what exactly is germinating marijuana seeds? What does it do? In this article, we will discuss the importance of seed germination and the common germination method. We will also share with you a step by step guide on how to germinate marijuana seeds.

What is seed germination?

Marijuana seed germination is the process of getting your seed to sprout to prepare them for planting. You will know that it is ready when a tendril pops out of the seed. The color is white and it looks like a small root.

It is essential to the plant’s future if germination is correctly done. It is also one of the most exciting stages of the whole growth. However, like any other plants, sometimes things do not go well, it can be frustrating, but no need to lose interest as you can try again. Learn from the mistakes and do better the second time.

How long does it take to germinate a marijuana seed?

Generally, the whole germination process takes roughly just 4 to 7 days! Growers usually find themselves planting marijuana seeds after germination. However, it is up to the growers if they wish to “settle” it down for a while longer. To plant marijuana seeds after germination, make sure you prepare the proper setup. If you choose either pots or directly into the ground, always opt for a proper soil mixture. The subsequent growing medium that you choose heavily influences the way cannabis plants will further develop. Adding nutrients and amendments such as coco coir will help boost the growth of a plant.

The importance of seed germination is just as important as growing the plant. To have a successfully grown marijuana plant, make sure that you have good quality seeds. Germinating is recommended so the plant can establish a stronger root system before it goes to potting. By allowing the seeds to fully sprout, the chances of having a healthy grown marijuana plant are viable. Of course, every grower wants to germinate marijuana seeds fast! Now, let’s learn how to germinate cannabis seeds.

GERMINATING MARIJUANA SEEDS

Now that we know what germination is, how do you germinate marijuana seeds? Well, the three most important things needed when germinating the seeds are darkness, warmth, and moisture. These underlying factors are the main determinants for a successful germination process.

While there are many ways to germinate the seeds, the easiest to do is the Paper Towel Method. Many people consider this as the best way to germinate marijuana seeds. Here are the steps:

  1. On a plate, lay flat 2 pieces of paper towel. Spray the towel with spring or distilled water to moisten it. Remember to just moisten and not drown it with water.
  2. Lay down your seeds, about an inch apart to give them enough space.
  3. Cover the seeds with  2 more pieces of paper towels.
  4. Cover the paper towel and seeds with another plate, to keep the moisture in, it will now look like a dome of plates. Remember to keep any grow lights off as dark environments usually result in a faster germination rate.
  5. Wait for another 2 to 4 days, checking regularly for changes. Watch out for the sprouting of the tendril (small root) coming out. Some seeds may take a week especially when the seeds are old.
  6. What exactly do germinated cannabis seeds look like? When the seeds have popped already and tiny white roots appear, it is a sign that it is now ready for planting.
  7. Use tweezers to remove the seeds. If in case it gets stuck to the paper towel, spray it with water to remove it easily. Do not force it out to avoid damage to the seed.
  8. Now you are ready for planting. The seeds should be planted right away.
  9. Prepare your pot with a light, airy, and moist medium. Poke a hole in the middle, around a quarter to a half-inch deep. Put in the seeds, root facing DOWN. Cover the seed with more medium (potting soil) without pushing downwards. It is important that you do not plant the seed too deep. Keep the medium moist and warm too. You can cover the pot with a clear wrap to add humidity.

It may take a couple of days to see progress in your newbie plant.  After a while, you will see a cannabis seedling emerge soon. Good Luck with your project.
