Have you ever wondered what seed vaults are? Pot seed companies are also similar to seed vaults because they store all kinds of seeds for future use. But it takes more than just keeping seeds for posterity, seed vaults are special containers that can help preserve the genetic material in seeds. This genetic material may not be available for many years, decades and centuries to come.
Why keep Seeds at all?
Seeds are small and therefore very easy to store. Seed banking preserves the genetic material inside the seed so that future people will still be able to appreciate the plants and trees that we know and enjoy today.
Seeds are easy to keep because these don’t take up so much space. These will remain viable for as long as this is kept in a place where there are constant humidity and low temperatures. Canadian seed banks have a large number of sativa to indica, ruderalis to landraces. These seed banks contribute to keeping the biodiversity in the world.
Cannabis seed banks are very similar to botanical seed banks that keep all kinds of seeds from trees and plants. Some seed vaults keep seeds, tissues, and embryos of plants that are already labeled as endangered.
Seed Vaults all Over the World
All over the world, there are amazing seed banks and seed vaults for specific types of plants and trees. Large seed banks such as the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens have a large number of seeds in the planet. Because of its size, there may also be cannabis seeds preserved here. This is as part of the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership with 27,000 species of plants that were preserved in their seed form. But despite this vast collection, this is still 10% of the Earth’s total number of species of plants species.
Most of the seeds found inside this seeds vault are already endangered species and curators of this vault say that this is because of irresponsible human actions. This seed bank is well-equipped with updated tools to keep humidity at the best level for preserving seeds and plants. This controlled environment also prevents mold and mildew from developing and ruining the seeds.
The redwood tree seed vault
One of the largest trees in the world is the Redwood tree but despite its size, it is preserved for future generations at the Archangel Ancient Tree Archive. The mission of this group is to collect genetic material from redwood trees and sequoia trees and many trees around the world.
Archangel Ancient Tree Archive has a wide and diverse tree species collection even trees that were alive for more than thousands of years are also preserved here. Most of the trees that are part of their collection are endangered species.
The Archangel Ancient Tree Archive aims to take samples and clone these plants and trees. They will plant these clones on colleges, forests, and parks around the world. They think that through this, they can replenish the dwindling population of giant trees in the world. More trees will also increase carbon dioxide absorption and the subsequent release of oxygen which humans and all other animals need.
Small cuttings are taken from tree branches. These are collected and placed in containers with vitamins and hormones. Then, the clones are grown in soil. Another method is to take clones from trees and cultivate these in mist chambers together with the soil.
Make your own cannabis seeds vault
If you grow cannabis plants, you can also make your own seed vault at home. Cannabis seeds need to be in an environment with controlled temperature and humidity so that these will last for a long time. Experts say that when cannabis seeds are carefully stored in a cool and dark environment, these may last for about 5 years.
Keep in mind that the fresher your cannabis seeds are, the better these will sprout. But if you must store seeds then you should learn how to properly do so so you may still use these for many years to come.
Don’t pick seeds too early
Don’t be too eager in harvesting seeds. Don’t pick these too early. Simply let your seeds mature by leaving them inside their pods until these grow a darker color. Never pick seeds when these are still colored green to light brown because these are premature seeds and will never germinate.
Consider that the longer you wait to germinate your seeds, the lesser a seed’s viability would be. There’s no doubt y you can store cannabis seeds properly to last a decade, but these old seeds may not sprout fast. Fresh seeds are always the best.
Storing cannabis seeds properly
The proper way to store cannabis seeds is in a dark container with a very tight lid. Plastic film canisters with a very tight lid would do just fine. These will carry around four to five at the back of the refrigerator.
Some growers have food-grade silica gel packets inside the canister or a small bit of uncooked rice inside a canister. These will preserve the seeds by absorbing moisture and placing the container in a dry environment.
If you want to preserve your cannabis seeds for longer, place the seeds along with rice or silica gel inside a plastic bag. Place this bag inside the canister, cover it and place this in the darkest and coldest part of your freezer.
Film canisters are hard to find these days so you can use an airtight container. If your seeds are inside breeder’s packaging, allow these to remain inside the package and seal this to keep in a cold and dark environment. This technique will help you keep seeds for a few months.
Storing cannabis seeds for a longer period of time
It is natural for growers and breeders to grow a lot of seeds. One plant can produce around a hundred seeds. Think about how many seeds you have if you grow five or ten plants!
For a lot of seeds, use vacuum-sealed containers. These are easy to find anywhere and are very easy to use. All you need to do is to place the seeds inside the bag, remove as much air as you can by pressing the bag and then sealing it with your fingertips.
There are vacuum sealed bags which have special features where you can use a small vacuum sealer to remove the air inside the bag.
Another way to store seeds for a longer period of time is to use re-sealable jars. You may use mason jars that have very tight lids. These are available in different sizes and shapes but these are not the most important feature of mason jars. It’s all about the jar’s very tight lid. There’s no need to lock the lid because this will hold on tight.
Using mason jars
You can’t just stuff your seeds inside mason jars. You must make sure that the jar is clean and dry before you put your seeds inside. Check the silicone or rubber seal because it has to be intact so it can cover the jar really well.
Never pack the seeds inside. always leave room for your seeds to breathe. Seeds are living things which will need enough room the mason jar. Use a sachet of food-grade desiccant or you may use raw rice bits in the jar to prevent moisture and the development of mold.
Keep seeds inside the back of the freezer which will be away from changes in humidity and temperature. This is considered the safest place to store seeds. The front area of your fridge can be affected by changes in temperature and humidity when you open the door.
If you want to use the seeds you have stored for a long time inside the fridge/freezer, take it out of the freezer and keep it inside the fridge. Allow the seeds to acclimate for about an hour or so and afterward, place these on your counter you may now take seeds.
What to Check for Seed Viability?
The purpose of seed banks is to preserve the viability of the seeds at all times. If you are ready to grow your seeds, check their viability before germinating.
Check the overall appearance of the seeds. Check if these are still intact and firm. Hold the seeds and inspect it for cracks, openings, and pits. You may find your seeds with spots, stripes, and speckles and these mean that the seeds are mature and are ready to sprout given the right conditions.
Check the weight of the seed by placing the seeds in a glass full of water. Allow the seeds to settle and leave this be for at least a few hours. Take note that seeds that will sink have viable insides and will likely sprout. Seeds that float are light and won’t contain any viable material.
Now that you have checked if your seeds are viable or not, you may now plant them. Make sure to follow Canadian seed bank techniques provided by the company to get the best results.
