Before you experience the refreshing buds and flowers of Cannabis plants, there are several stages that these plants undergo before blooming. People across the globe are planting their own seeds to practice gardening and at the same time, help to build a better environment.
A wasted seed is wasted money and so, before planting, here are some methods to plant your Marijuana Seeds.
Factors for Successful Germination
Germination, according to Wikipedia, “is the process by which an organism grows from a seed or similar structure. In a general sense, germination can be thought of as anything expanding into greater being from a small existence or germ.” The life of all plants on Earth starts with this crucial and sensitive period.
All of the seeds, including your Marijuana Seeds, bought Online, are subject to the four factors- Water, Light, Oxygen, and Temperature. These factors will dictate on whether the seeds will grow healthy and strong or stunting and undernourished.
Water serves as hydration for the seeds while Oxygen is the metabolism fuel of the seeds. Light serves as the triggering cause for growth (used for waking up of the seeds) and temperature affects the speed of growing.
Too much application on any of these four will affect the seeds. Chances are that these will grow with defects. Worse, they will not grow at all and your money spent will lead to nothing.
Water should not flood your planted seeds – they may drown and fail to mature. If exposed in too much light, seeds will dry quickly. If spared from the air and kept closed with air-tight containers, your seeds will suffer from suffocation. If exposed to too much heat or coldness, your seed will break into pieces due to the energy it receives from heat or cold.
However, if you followed this advice, there is a great chance that your seeds will develop their first root (taproot) growing up and sprout their first leaves (cotyledons). Cotyledons break the shells and develop further into a full bloom plant.
As cotyledons grow, the shells of your seeds wear out and break. These will fall and create a wider room for the growth of Marijuana leaves.
Cotyledons will produce greener leaves, thicker stem and longer roots shooting downward. The small plant will evolve and eventually be the Cannabis plant you dream to plant in your backyard.
The Methods of Germination
Have you tried planting mung beans way back in Primary School Days? The steps you did there is applicable to your Cannabis Seeds!
- Paper Towel Method
Needed Materials: Paper Towel, Dining Plates, and Water
Damp your Paper Towel with water and place your seeds on it. You must keep up the moisture of towel by enclosing this with another plate and leave the seeds lying on a damp towel for 1-4 days. Regularly check if the seeds develop the first white root shooting up or away from the seed.
If checking, be cautious not to disturb the seeds by shaking. The first root and the seed are both sensitive and any movement underneath may cause harm and stoppage to their growth. If the roots continue to grow for a quarter of an inch, you may transfer them to your soil pots and continue the process of planting.
- Glass Water Method
Needed Materials: Old Seeds, Drinking glass, Warm Water
Pour a quarter of your Drinking Glass with water. Simply put your Old Seeds and let it be soaked for overnight. Take note that this method is applicable only to the old seeds because of their hardened shells.
The purpose of submerging the old seeds in slightly warm water is to soften their shells which will eventually be penetrated by the liquid. In the beginning, all the seeds float on the water, but as the time passes by, they will submerge and the roots start to grow, shooting up from the seeds.
- Starter Cubes and Seedling Plugs
Needed Materials: Seedling Cubes/Plugs, Warm Water
Simply put a seed in a hole provided on each cube. After placing, cover the hole by pinching and water lightly. Using Seedling Plugs for germination increase your seeds’ survival and successful growth.
For beginners, this method is the easiest among the five. It is the most expensive yet the most effective. The plugs are best used when placed with Seedling trays, just like what we can see in a Nursery.
- Stone Wool Blocks
Needed Materials: Stone Wool Block, Warm Water
The steps of planting Marijuana Seeds on Stone Wool Block is similar to Starter Cubes. However, Stone Wool Blocks do not have holes and create lesser Germination rates than Seedling Plugs. This is because Stone Wool Blocks contain acidic chemicals but washes out if rinsed thoroughly.
- Soil Planting
Needed Materials: Pot, Soil, Warm Water
This method is the traditional way of planting since then. Naturally, farmers plant the seeds on soils with an inch depth and are observed in Nursery Plants. For the type of soil, loam soils are perfect for all Cannabis seeds due to its nutrients and moisture.
After placing for an inch deep, water the spot where the seed buries lightly. If your pots are big, you may place two to three seeds, provided that they will have space from one another.
Which Germination Method Can You Use?
Depending on your skills and experience in gardening, these methods of planting seeds are all effective. If you are new with this, simply ask help from Online Communities or neighbors who plant Cannabis for a long time.
Never hesitate to seek advice from the farmers. Embarrassing as it is, but neglecting the seeds is worse than being truthful with your lacking skills. People started learning from nothing, there is no harm in asking!
They may have different varieties but all Marijuana Seeds undergo Germination which starts with these different methods. Always remember that Marijuana Seeds are vulnerable and highly sensitive to everything.
One shake on their displacements, their growing taproots may sustain damage forever. Overexposure to light may dry the seeds. Too much watering will drown them.
Too much heat will burn the seeds. On the other hand, when the room temperature is too cold, they will freeze and die right away. Too much air regulation will suffocate them and may grow slower.
Planting is not just for your self-serving purposes, but for the seeds and nature as well. Committing yourself in nourishing the seeds may define who you are and how do you need Cannabis in your life. The end product of the seeds will figure out your caring skills as well.
